The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
