Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
