Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
