A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
